Pura Ulun Danu

A short drive along the rim of the volcano takes us to the temple of Pura Ulun Danu - the second biggest temple in Bali, after Besakih.

It's an impressive place, with huge stone carvings and multi-tiered towers, but it has a desolate and joyless feel to it, perhaps because of the heavy overcast that hangs around the mountaintop. And for the first time in Bali, we're actually cold.

The temple is huge, with many courtyards and sub-temples, but we're done fairly quickly and head back to the car. It's interesting that the bigger and more imposing temples (Besakih and Ulun Danu) speak to us less than the smaller village temples which seem much more filled with the joy and beauty of Balinese life.
